What Is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis can be defined as the chronic autoimmune condition, affecting skeletal muscles of the body. The disease is characterized by progressive degeneration of the voluntary muscles causing them to become weak and functionally useless.
The hallmark of the disease, which literally means grave muscle weakness, is weakness of some of the important muscles such as eyes, eyelids, face muscles involved in chewing, talking, swallowing, etc.

How Prevalent Is Myasthenia Gravis?

Published data over 50 years suggested that MG is a very rare disease. The reported prevalence of the disease is almost 21 cases amongst 1,00,000 populations. Although, the reported prevalence have been increased in every decade, since 1950’s.
The occurrence of the disease is found to be equal in people with all ethnic groups. The study has as well reported more cases of young adult women below the age 40 yrs and men above 60 years.

Factors Responsible For MG

Researchers so far could confirm that faulty antibodies are responsible for the expression of MG. Apart from the main reason; some genetic predispositions are also well known to trigger the disease. Some of the common environmental factors which are noted to worsen the symptoms can be recorded as:

Symptoms Associated With The MG

Due to overuse of the affected muscle, the pain and weakness of the muscle increases. However, it has been observed that symptoms generally improve with the rest, but tend to progress over the period of time. Some of the general symptoms may include:

What Goes Wrong In The Mg?

MG is known to be an autoimmune disease, wherein faulty antibodies are responsible for destroying the voluntary muscles. The voluntary muscles of the entire body are being controlled by the central nervous system, through the nerve impulses. These nerve impulses are being passed on from the brain to the different muscles of the entire body through the network of brain cells known as neurons. When the nerve impulse travels down from brain to the muscles, it releases a chemical known as acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This chemical then gets attached to different receptors of the muscle fibre to pass on the information.
In MG, some faulty antibodies are responsible for destroying or blocking the receptor sites for an attachment of acetylcholine. The research has confirmed about 80% reduction in the receptor site in the patients known to be having MG.
Current traditional treatments that can be offered to the patients with MG are some steroidal supplements, thymectomy, etc. Although, long term use of these chemicals can be hazardous and hence there is always a demand of alternative treatment that is more effective and risk free.

How Stem Cells Treatment May Help!

Stem cells are the mother cells that are responsible for developing an entire human body from a tiny two celled embryo; due to their unlimited divisions and strong power to differentiate into all the cells of different lineage. This power of stem cells has been harnessed by the technology to isolate them outside the human body, concentrate in the clean environment and infused back.

Thus, stem cells treatment involves administration of concentrated cells in the targeted area, wherein they can colonize in the damaged area, adapt the properties of resident stem cells and initiate some of the lost functions that have been compromised by the disease or injury.

After years of research, it has been believed that it is better to alter the microenvironment with the application of stem cells instead of suppressing the immune system. Mesenchymal stem cells are known to have angiogenic, transdifferentiation and homing properties, which are useful for forming new blood vessels, differentiating into required targeted cells and creation of microenvironment for the faster secretion of immune cells.
The worldwide studies have confirmed considerable decrease in the antibodies against acetylcholine receptors after stem cells treatment on mice.

Treatment Of MG At GIOSTAR

We have mastered the technology for isolating maximum number of viable stem cells from either the autologous sources of your own body or allogeneically with the matched donor to treat various patients with MG. We are the licensed, private organization with the excellent, well equipped state of the art facility to isolate process and enrich the viable number of stem cells, which can be re infused back into the patient’s body. Generally, these cells are administered through any one of the below mentioned methods depending upon our expert’s advice:

SUB-CUTANEOUS ADMINISTRATION

In case of skin; stem cells can as well be administered in the fat layer of the skin. They can help regenerating skin cells, promote restructuring of skin tissue..

INTRAVENOUS ADMINISTRATION

Through this mode, cells are infused through the veins to expand blood volumes in the central nervous system, to ensure that the maximum number of cells are reaching to the targeted area.

Once infused back in the body, these cells can be repopulated at the damaged parts of the organ, through their strong paracrine effects and differentiate into lost or damaged cells to restore back the function. These cells can regulate immune system and minimize the impact of autoimmunity. One of the important properties of mesenchymal stem cells is to promote vascularisation and vessel formation, which can improve the strength of the blood vessels and also promote synthesis of new vessels. When infused in the deep layer of the skin, these stem cells are known to promote synthesis of lost fibroblasts, keratinocytes and skin epithelial cells to promote faster restructuring of cells. These mesenchymal stem cells are known to be exhibiting strong immunomodulatory properties that can suppress the production of faulty antibodies in autoimmune disorders.
Thus with our standardized, broad based and holistic approach, it is now possible to obtain noticeable improvements in the patients with the MG, in the symptoms as well as their functional abilities.
